HFCs are generally classed as A1, meaning non-toxic, non-flammable. Some HFOs are classed as A2L refrigerants which are non-toxic but mildly flammable. A2Ls are slow to ignite and have slow flame speed so are considered safer than some alternatives. However, they still require careful handling due to this moderate flammability. Always follow safety protocols when working with A2L refrigerants.

High-pressure refrigerant cylinders are equipped with pressure relief devices (PRDs) that ensure the cylinder does not become over pressurized. Most refrigerants (HFCs and HFOs) contain PFAS chemicals, except for R-32. However, PFAS contains more than 10,000 chemicals and different types of PFAS are shown to have different levels of health and environmental impact. According to the EPA, PFAS in refrigerants are not categorized in the groups that have a negative impact on the environment and human body. Based on the EPA findings, the PFAS in refrigerants are non-bio-cumulative and non-toxic.
